BBQ Smoked Turkey

Oven baked Turkeys are easy. The are very traditional and there is NOTHING wrong with them. Oven turkeys have been working for years and they are delicious! However, if given the opportunity with decent weather to smoke a turkey .. we are smoking a turkey for sure. This also helps to clear space in the oven for all those delicious side dishes you will also be preparing.

Ingredients

  • 1 5-7kg Turkey

  • 4 Tbsp. Pepper

  • 4 Tbsp. Salt

  • 4 Tbsp. Paprika

  • 2 Tbsp. Sage

  • 2 Tbsp. Thyme

  • 2 Tbsp. Rosemary

  • 2 Tbsp. Garlic Powder

  • 1.5 Tbsp. Onion Powder

  • 1.5 Tbsp. Summer Savory

Directions

  • Please note before you get into this that even though you are smoking it on the BBQ you will still need wood chips (we use hickory flavor) and a smoke box to house them. You can buy these at any local hardware type store. You will need to soak the wood chips for at least 30 minutes prior to placing in the smoke box.

  • Pre-heat the BBQ to 250F degrees. Combine all seasonings in a bowl and rub all parts of the turkey generously with the rub. Add more as needed.

  • Remove the left side of the BBQ rack. Fill the smoke box with wood chips and set on the left side of the BBQ. Place the turkey on the right side. Close the lid and allow to cook.

  • Check periodically and rotate turkey as needed. Replenish wood chips as well. Cook approximately 6-7 hours or until turkey has reached an internal temperature 165F. It is that simple.
